What to agree before starting a monthly plan

  • Access. Google Search Console, Google Business Profile, and analytics stay in your accounts, with the agency added as a user.
  • Technical scope. Which indexing, performance, structured-data, or internal-link changes will be made, and who can approve them.
  • Local scope. The eligible business profiles, service areas, and business-information work included in your plan.
  • Content scope. Agree page and article quantities, who supplies information, approval responsibilities, and any separately quoted production.
  • A report in plain English. Rankings, traffic, calls, and form fills, and what changed since last month.
  • A plan with dates. What will be done this quarter and what you should expect to see.

What AI search adds to the scope

AI search work shares the foundations of SEO: useful original content, accurate business information, crawlable public pages, and a good visitor experience. We can also record observed citations for a defined set of customer questions. Google requires no special AI schema and ignores llms.txt for Search visibility. Search-crawler access is assessed separately from model-training permissions. Our guide to AEO and GEO for local businesses explains the scope and its limits.

How long results take

Planning periodWork to agreeWhat to measure
Month 1Audit, technical fixes, Google Business Profile cleanup, schemaFaster site, cleaner listings, a written plan
Months 2–3Improve useful service content, answer real customer questions, correct relevant listingsIndexing, relevant impressions, profile actions, qualified enquiries
Months 4–6Evaluate content and enquiry flows against the baselineChanges in non-brand traffic, qualified leads, and observed AI citations
Month 6 onwardRefine priorities using actual resultsCost per qualified lead and sales outcomes, where data is available

These are work-planning periods, not a forecast of rankings, AI citations, or leads. Results depend on competition, the starting site, business reputation, demand, and consistent execution. Agree the baseline, deliverables, and review dates before committing.

Questions that expose a thin retainer

  • What exactly will you change on my website this month?
  • Who writes the content, and can I see samples from a similar business?
  • How do you build links or mentions, and can I see where they come from?
  • Will I own every account and every page you create?
  • How do you measure AI-search visibility?
  • What happens if I cancel after the initial term?

Red flags that mean walk away

Google's own guidance is clear: no one can guarantee a ranking, and link schemes and other spam tactics can get a site demoted or removed.

  • Guaranteed rankings or a guaranteed number of leads
  • Secret or proprietary techniques that cannot be explained
  • The agency owns the website, the content, or the Google Business Profile
  • Link packages, private blog networks, or thousands of directory submissions
  • No access to your own Search Console or analytics
  • A contract longer than a year with no exit
